If you’re replacing or adding an HVAC system in your commercial building, your AC installation specialist may have recommended a Packaged or Rooftop (RTU) HVAC system. But what exactly is an RTU HVAC system, and why is it a good option to consider for your commercial space? Your trusted HVAC contractor American Refrigeration Heating and Air Conditioning Co., Inc. explains the difference between an RTU system and a traditional HVAC system in today’s post.
What is a Packaged, or RTU, HVAC System?
As the name suggests, a rooftop unit, or RTU, is a type of HVAC system that contains all the components necessary to provide cooling and heating to your commercial space in one package. They’re typically used in medium to large commercial buildings and contain the AC evaporator coil, AC condenser coil, AC compressor, a heat source and a fan in one box.
These days, packaged units are very popular because they’re more efficient, which means lower utility bills for you. Cooling and heating maintenance is also simplified since all components can be found in a single unit. Installation is much easier than with other HVAC systems, and most importantly, they don’t take up precious indoor space since they’re installed on the rooftop.
If you own a business that requires heating and cooling a large open space such as a warehouse, a big retail store or a restaurant, then you should probably consider an RTU HVAC system. As long as your building doesn’t exceed 10 stories and has easy access to the rooftop, an RTU is a solid investment for your business.
As with most things, RTU systems do have a few disadvantages. For one thing, since they’re located outside, they’re more prone to damage from the elements. If you live in an area with extreme weather conditions, this could be a serious issue. The outdoor location is also away from foot traffic, which makes them more susceptible to animal infestation.
