Your home’s ductwork distributes heated or cooled air from the HVAC system to your living spaces. Without it, every room would feel either too hot or too cold on any given day. But did you know that air ducts are made of different materials? In this blog, local HVAC contractor American Refrigeration Heating and Cooling, Co. takes a look at four of the most common ductwork materials available on the market today.
Sheet metal. This rigid ductwork material is made of galvanized steel or aluminum, making it a durable choice for your home. Its interior is effective at trapping airborne particles and has a smooth surface that allows for easy cleaning. Like your HVAC system, sheet metal ductwork needs to be cleaned and maintained to ensure consistent comfort and good indoor air quality.
Fiberglass. Fiberglass has the same structural makeup as sheet metal ductwork, but with an added fiberglass lining on the inside to minimize heat loss. However, it requires extensive cleaning, which can weaken the material and make it less sturdy. One of its notable advantages is that it helps reduce the noise coming from the HVAC system, making it a popular choice in commercial cooling and heating installation projects.
Fiberboard. This ductwork material is made of resin-bonded fiberglass strands with an insulating exterior foil wrapping them together. The texture provided by the strands helps catch dust, dirt and other particles passing through the ducts. This, however, can impact long-term HVAC efficiency and indoor air quality.
Flexible ductwork. This type of ductwork is made with a steel spring coil covered in thick plastic. Its flexibility allows for easy installation, especially in tight spaces around your home. However, doing so requires caution. Punctures and other irregularities in the air ducts can affect how your heating and air conditioning system performs.
