Troubleshooting Tips for Commercial Heat Pump Issues

Commercial heat pumps can experience mechanical problems that keep them from providing consistent comfort. While you can always get in touch with a heating and AC installation technician if your heat pump is having issues, it’s also possible to do some troubleshooting on your own first. Continue reading for some tips that can help you determine the problem.

Commercial Heat Pump Issues

Ice formation. A thick layer of ice and snow can blanket the entire heat pump unit during the winter months, preventing it from facilitating heat transfer between the outdoor air and the refrigerant. This issue should be addressed quickly or the equipment could become severely damaged. Use water from a hose to melt the ice. Remove any snow and debris blocking the unit. Patch up the gutters to keep water from dripping onto the heat pump.

Continuous operation. A heat pump runs longer and provides less heat than a furnace. However, if the temperature during the winter months stays above the 30s but the unit still runs continuously, there could be a problem within its internal components. Issues that can cause the heat pump to continue running include a refrigerant leak and a faulty compressor. In addition, the unit itself might be too small for the space it’s heating. To determine the root cause, call your heater maintenance contractor as soon as possible.

Blowing cold air while in heating mode. Your commercial heat pump is supposed to function based on the mode of operation to which you set it. It will blow cool air when you set it on cooling mode, and the same applies when you switch it to heating mode. However, if it’s doing the opposite, the heat pump might have a problem with its interior components, such as the valve or compressor. The refrigerant inside it could also be lacking and may require charging. Sometimes, it might just need a bit of cleaning and maintenance, especially if it’s overdue for service.
