High indoor humidity during the sweltering summer months can be irritating. If not controlled, it can lead to mold and rot, in addition to discomfort. It’s best to keep your home’s humidity level between 30 and 50 percent. Fortunately, lowering the humidity in your home isn’t as difficult as you might think. Check out these tips to keep in mind this summer.
1. Use a dehumidifier. Your AC system does a good job of removing humidity in your living spaces but to bolster its effectiveness, you may consider investing in a dehumidifier. It fits right inside the air handler of your AC, removing the moisture from the air that passes through it.
2. Use exhaust fans. During the summer, exhaust fans help maintain ideal humidity levels. They’re most commonly found in bathrooms and kitchens, where moisture levels are normally high. Leaving them on a bit longer helps to effectively remove moisture released into the air through activities such as cooking, dishwashing and showering.
3. Get more plants. Houseplants are more than just decorative elements in your home; they’re also known to be natural dehumidifiers, with leaves being able to absorb moisture in the air. Before buying houseplants, however, do your research because not all of them help to reduce humidity. Orchids, palms, cactus and spider plants are examples of houseplants that help reduce moisture levels.
4. Open windows for ventilation. Increasing your home’s passive ventilation will aid in the evaporation of any moisture in your home. This is particularly beneficial in rooms that feel stuffier than the rest of the house. Increased air circulation will help reduce humidity and distribute the cool air from your air conditioner more evenly.
