A heat pump is an energy-efficient alternative to conventional heating and cooling systems for all climates. In order to take full advantage of your heat pump during the summer months, it is important to know the do’s and don’ts of using it. A heating service technician elaborates on this set of guidelines here.
Do’s
-
Mind the thermostat. A functioning thermostat is crucial to the operation of your heat pump. If you still have an analog thermostat, it is time to make the switch to a smart or programmable thermostat. In addition to its lack of complex functions, an analog thermostat can confuse your heat pump if it malfunctions or breaks down.
-
Clean the heat pump. Let a qualified technician inspect your heat pump, thoroughly clean it and repair it if needed. A filthy unit can significantly reduce the quality of air inside your home. It can trigger allergy symptoms and other respiratory complications that are detrimental to occupants.
-
Keep an eye on the refrigerant. Without correct refrigerant levels, there is no way your heat pump will function optimally and efficiently. An air conditioning service provider recommends regularly checking the levels and having the refrigerant refilled as needed. Otherwise, you risk damage to the compressor and poor airflow.
Don’ts
-
Use the AUTO mode. While using the AUTO mode is convenient, it runs the risk of unnecessarily switching between heating and cooling. When the weather is warm, simply set your heat pump to COOL mode.
-
Use the lowest fan speed. Your heat pump will work more efficiently if set to a higher fan speed. Use the speed you and your family are comfortable with, then set your desired temperature setting.
