What to Do Before Your AC Technician Arrives

AC Technician

If your air conditioner were to suddenly stop working during the worst heat wave of the summer, you’d want an immediate solution to your problem, even if it occurs overnight or on the weekend. Until your AC technician arrives, there are some things you can do to ensure the repair process goes as quickly as possible. Your technician will need to know a few details upon arrival, and having this information already on hand will help the repair go more smoothly.

In this post, professional HVAC contractor, American Refrigeration Heating and Air Conditioning Co., Inc, shares some tips to keep your home as cool as possible before your AC technician arrives.

Examine your air filter. If the filter becomes clogged, your air conditioner can’t do its job, so you might experience a lack of cool air coming from the vents. Since the air filter is the easiest fix for a faulty air conditioner, check it first. It helps to keep a supply of fresh filters on hand so you can change it out as needed. If the filter looks clogged, replace it with a new one and test your air conditioner.

Check the breakers. If the power goes out or a power surge occurs, your air conditioner’s breaker might trip without your knowledge. Locate your breaker box and make sure all the switches point in the correct direction. Only reset your breaker one time. If it continues to trip after you start operating the unit again, there’s something wrong with your air conditioner, and you’ll need an HVAC professional’s assistance.

Take notes to help identify the problem. Before your technician arrives, make a list of notes to help identify the problem. Did the unit stop working? Did it make a noise? Is there an odor? Is there a leak? Is it not receiving electricity? Is it not cooling properly? Answering questions like this before your cooling service repair technician arrives will speed up the repair process.

Clear the way for the technician to work. Clear the path around the unit so that your technician has plenty of room to maneuver and make the necessary repairs.

Check your AC unit’s brand and model. Provide your technician with the manufacturer name and model number of your equipment by checking on your initial bill of sale. If this information isn’t available from the paperwork, you shouldn’t attempt to open any equipment in order to access this information. If your air conditioning system is covered by a limited warranty, be certain to tell your HVAC technician.

Determine the age of your AC unit. Before going through with a complicated, expensive repair, it’s a good idea to double-check the age of your unit. An air conditioning unit that’s 15+ years old may be more efficiently replaced rather than repaired. You can sometimes estimate whether or not the cost of repairs will be worth it by comparing the age of the unit with the total cost to repair it.
