Incorrect thermostat setting. Your air conditioner may not be blowing cold air because the settings on your thermostat are incorrect. First make sure it’s set to cool. If it is, check the temperature setting to see whether or not it’s unchanged. Switch it back to “cool” mode if you see that the thermostat is off or set to either “heat” or “fan” mode. Once the system kicks on, wait for a few minutes before checking if the registers are blowing cold air. If this doesn’t work, you might have the next problem on this list.
Dirty HVAC filters. One of the reasons why your air conditioner isn’t cooling enough could be a dirty, clogged air filter. The air filter captures dust, dirt and any airborne contaminants that pass through the unit’s air handler. If there’s too much buildup, it can block airflow and reduce cooling in your home. Worse, it could completely shut down the unit. Fortunately, this is an easy fix – just clean or replace your air filters as needed as part of your regular home maintenance routine.
Dirty outdoor AC unit. The outdoor condenser unit plays an important role in the cooling process. It houses the condenser fan, which draws air into the outdoor unit through the condenser coil to pull heat out of your house. If the coil gets clogged or blocked by debris, your cooling system won’t be able to provide consistent comfort throughout the house. To determine if this is indeed the case, get in touch with your local HVAC contractor to have your system inspected.
Low refrigerant levels. Your air conditioning unit has a fluid called refrigerant that absorbs heat from the air around your system. If you notice hissing or bubbling noises coming from your air conditioner, it’s likely that there’s a refrigerant leak. Call your local HVAC contractor as soon as possible to have the problem sorted out. Checking your air conditioner’s refrigerant levels should also be part of your maintenance check with your technician.
