Should You Get an Oversized Air Conditioner?

Bigger isn’t always better, particularly when it comes to air conditioners. In today’s post, your local HVAC company American Refrigeration Heating and Air Conditioning Co., Inc. shares a look at what happens if you choose an air conditioner that’s bigger than your home needs.

Air Conditioners Need to Be Properly Sized

Buying a new HVAC system involves a lot more than just picking something you think looks good. One of the first things an HVAC contractor will ask you about is your home’s floor area, because this will help them determine the type of air conditioners that are appropriate for your home. If you choose an air conditioner that’s too small, you’ll end up running it at full capacity all the time just to meet your home’s basic cooling needs. As a result, the constant strain on the system will eventually lead to premature failure.

What Happens When You Choose an Oversized Air Conditioner?

Going the other extreme and choosing an oversized air conditioner isn’t a good idea either. In fact, it will present a host of other problems.

  • Short cycling – Short cycling occurs when an air conditioner reaches the desired temperature too quickly, resulting in short cooling cycles. Stopping and starting too frequently can put increased strain on the air conditioner, which, as happens with undersized air conditioners, will also lead to premature failure.

  • Increased humidity levels – Cool air naturally removes moisture from the air. An oversized, short-cycling air conditioner, however, won’t be able to do this. On top of mold growth and condensation on the windows,  your indoor spaces will feel moist and clammy throughout the summer season.

  • Uneven cooling – Another effect of a short-cycling air conditioner is uneven cooling. Running a fan can help distribute cool air in the room, something you usually don’t need to do if the air conditioner is sized properly.

  • High energy bills – Short-cycling ultimately has the same effect as turning your HVAC system off and on instead of programming the thermostat – it consumes more electricity, resulting in higher energy bills.
